History of The Guayabera Shirt.

The Guayabera Shirt is originally from Cuba and is more than 200 years old. It was designed by Spanish immigrants in Cuba in the 1800’s. Cuba’s poet Juan Cristobal Napoles Fajardo also known as “El Cucalambe” (1829-1862) created a poem praising the guayabera which reads.

Juan Cristobal Napoles Fajardo (El Cucalamb) (El Cubalambe')  was from Tunas de Bayamo, Oriente province born July 1, 1829 believed killed by Spanish authorities in 1862. After the Cuban independence the Cuban government created the Day of the Guayabera the 1st of July which was Juan Cristobal Napoles Fajardo Birthday.

At the Beginning of last century wealthy Cubans used to travel to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico wearing Mexican Wedding Shirts and later the Guayabera shirt was adopted in Mexico. Most people think the guayabera is from Mexico. Merida city is now days the main exporters of Mexican Wedding Shirts in Mexico, these shirts are also known in the US as Mexican Wedding Shirts.
